How To Crate Train Your Golden Retriever |

Crate training is one of the most rewarding ways to help a new puppy adjust to using the bathroom outside. It will also aid in giving your pet an area that is all its own.
A dog crate is...
A dog crate is a type of kennel that gives your dog its special and safe place. It is just the right thing for your dog when you can not watch him/her. You can fit any kind of dog in the crate from a Grate Dane to a Chihuahua!

The owner feels like I'm putting by dog in jail or it's cruel. I could never do that to my dog!
As viewed by the dog...
The dog sees it as a den and its special place to get away. If I want to sleep that is where I can go and I can relax yea!
Benefits for the owner...
.you can enjoy peace and go relax with out having to keep checking up on your dog!
.you can put him in the crate when people come or your family!
Benefits for the dog...
.Can have some time alone!
you can take your dog on trips and visits instead of a boarding kennel.
Place the crate in a area where people will be around for the puppy to see so they don't feel alone. To make your puppy more comfortable in his crate you can feed them or give a word like " kennel up" and then give them a treat when they go in. I did this with my dog Betsy! This helps them to know that the kennel will not harm them and this is their special place.
Use a small enough crate so that your puppy wont use it to potty, although you need to make sure that it is large enough for your puppy to turn around and stand up while he/she is in the crate. If the crate is to big right now for the puppy rather than buying a smaller one you can use a board to temporarily make the room and crate smaller. Puppies or dogs rarely go to the bathroom where they sleep. Place the puppy in the crate anytime that you can not watch him/her closely or at night when you are sleeping. Remember you may have to get up early in the morning to let your puppy out at first until the pup is able to go through the night. If when you first place the puppy in the crate there is fusing just ignore him or tell him NO until they learn. Do not leave puppy in the crate for more than a few hours at a time except at night while sleeping. Before you place him in the crate be sure to take him outside to do his business, and remember to watch for signs that your puppy may need to go to the bathroom and never leave a puppy in a crate for long periods of time. This may set back training and make your puppy feel neglected.
Keep a diary of when your puppy eats and eliminate. This will help you to know when your puppy needs to go to the bathroom. Once training is over begin letting him roam the house with a little more freedom as he learns to go outside. If he has an accident do not scold him or hit him simply return him to his crate and clean up the mess.
"Far too many potentially good pets are misunderstood, unfairly punished/abused, isolated, or simply "gotten rid of " by otherwise kind and well
- meaning owners who are unable to prevent, control, or live with a common " problem " behavior of puppies and young adult dogs. The correct use of a dog crate could give many of these innocent animals the the chance they need- and deserve- to spend their lives as the appreciated pet of a satisfied owner. Since every dog deserves this chance" - A Pet Owner's Guide to the Dog Crate By Nicki Meyer
You want to enjoy your pet and be pleased with his behavior... Your dog wants little more from life than to please you... A dog crate can help to make your relationship what each for you want and need it to be.
